The Effects of Computer Assisted Distant Pronunciation Instruction on Attitudes of University Students

Abstract—The aim of this study is to determine the effect of computer assisted distant English pronunciation instruction on the attitudes of university students towards pronunciation. With this aim in mind, 100 English prep-class students in different classes attending English prep-classes at Selçuk University School of Foreign Languages were included in the study. Fifty students were blindly assigned as the control group and fifty of them were assigned as the experimental group. In the experimental group, the pronunciation of pre-determined list of vocabulary was taught via distant education, the control group was taught with traditional way with a teacher in class. After 12 weeks of instruction period, there was a significant increase in attitudes of the experimental group towards pronunciation. However, when post-instruction attitude scores of the experimental and the control group were compared, it was seen that both methods had similar level of effect on increasing students’ positive attitudes towards pronunciation.
